Mirroring Drums
As part of MA Sound Arts final show, Noise Bodies at
Dilston Grove
Mirroring Drums are two large format drums that
situate themselves somewhere between eardrum, microphone, speaker, and drum.
Within different instances, they could be used as an oversized set of binaural
microphones to create a recording for something the scale of a building could
only really take a sense of enjoyment from or as a loudspeaker, where they can’t
help but discolour the sound with their own selfish resonance. They are sensing
organisms that use the membrane as a focal point. They are spatial
interventions mirroring the space they inhabit both visually and sonically.
They are ongoing research entities that are multifaceted tools.
At Dilston Grove, they take on the role of the speaker.
Sounding out recordings they and their smaller drum counterparts have made
within the field. In the gallery, one situates itself off the ground to mirror
the space it inhabits, and the other decides to keep grounded in order to see
you and for you to see yourself.
